THE NEW YORK TIMES – Every year for the last nine years, the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum has chosen a slate of design-world worthies to receive its National Design Award. And every year at the time of the announcement (this year it is Thursday), some in that same design world scratch their heads, wondering if this is an awards program meant to reward the young and innovative, to celebrate the reigning masters or to give thanks to the greats as they exit the stage.
